When Kate was diagnosed with the shrinking virus, all of her friends told her horror stories of people who had shrunk and been found by their enemies and tortured relentlessly. Although Kate was still afraid of shrinking, she was relieved to know that she didn't have any enemies. She was always nice to everyone and avoided conflict. She wouldn't end up tortured, in the bottom of someone's smelly sneakers. She would be cared for by her friends and family.
One day when she was at the grocery store with her sister, (she always had to have someone with her in public, in case the shrinking occurred), it happened. She started to shrink. Unfortunately for her, it happened right after her sister had gone into the bathroom and left her by herself. "It's okay," she thought to herself. "I'll just wait here. When she comes back I'll get her attention." Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open and she felt instantly relieved. She started jumping up and down, waving her arms. "Lucy! Lucy, down here! It's Kate!" As the woman came around the door, Kate noticed it wasn't Lucy. She didn't recognize this woman, but she definitely caught her attention. This mystery woman looked around and then quickly picked Kate up and stuffed her in her pocket. Kate tried fighting it. She tried climbing out, but every time she tried, the giant stranger's fingers would push her back down.
After what seemed like hours, she was finally released from her dark prison. She thought she was finally free, until she came to the realization that she was just being transferred from one prison to another. She was being lowered into a smelly old pair of nylons. The giant woman never once said a word. Never acknowledged her. Just used her like an object. As soon as she was dropped into the bottom of the nylon stocking, the woman started slipping her foot into it, completely smothering Kate, and proceeded to slip into her pumps.
This was Kate's life now. Her giant kidnapper, who she'd later overhear was named Marissa, never spoke a word to her as long as she lived. She simply used her like an insole. Like an object. Kate almost never got a moments rest. If she wasn't in her shoes, she was in her socks or slippers while Marissa relaxed around the house or slept. Kate kept thinking about how unfair it all was. She was so nice and got along with everyone. She didn't deserve this fate.
